PRODUCT CARE

Waxed Canvas is a specialised product, used for generations to keep people warm and dry but it only requires a few simple practices to keep it clean and looking good for years to come. The following information is a guide, for any issues that are not covered please contact us and we will be glad to assist.

Basic Care

  • Waxed cotton canvas is 100% cotton that has been impregnated with a paraffin based wax to make it highly water resistant but not weigh it down.

  • The wax is susceptible to heat, so please keep your waxed canvas products out of direct sunlight and away from other sources of heat. The oils in the canvas can leach into surrounding fabrics if it gets too hot and may also change the colour of any leather on the product.

  • Waxed canvas can also become stiff if its left in the cold but it will relax as it warms up again.

  • If your bag or accessory gets wet or damp please make sure you give it a chance to dry by hanging it somewhere with good air flow. The canvas is highly water resistant but prolonged exposure to water can damage the product and cause mildew to form if it is not kept in a dry place.

  • The colour of your canvas will lighten with age, this shouldnt affect the water resistance of the product but rewaxing every few years is recommended - see below.

Cleaning

To clean your waxed canvas bag or product there are a few rules to follow.

  • For a general clean a damp cloth with warm or cold water should be sufficient. Do not use hot water or soap.

  • Alternatively wait until it is dry and brush it clean with a soft brush.

  • Mildew can be removed with a cloth dampened with white vinegar.

  • Leave the product to air dry fully in a warm, dry place before storage.

  • Do not use soap, or cleaning products that are not specifically designed for waxed canvas.

Re waxing

Do you need to rewax?

Re waxing is an obvious part of owning waxed canvas products but it is not essential. Like any coated product the water resistance will fade over time and if you want to, you can rewax. If you dont the product will still work, it may beome lighter in colour and have patches where it rubs to a shine but it will still look fabulous.

If you think that it needs rewaxing you can buy reproofing wax online, which usually comes in a tin, this tin you then warm up and rub into the product with a sponge. Then you leave it to dry and continue using it as normal.

I am hoping to start stocking reproofing wax at some point in the future.
